Recently I started playing The Darkest Faerie for Ps2 and despite the bugs I have loved it. I loved the lore included in it and I’d like to know your view on this plot. I’d love to know any info about the development of this story if there’s any, as well as what things you liked and disliked and which characters you like the most from it.
When I started playing neopets like 13 years ago I never understood the faerie statue underwater XD
But she is an interesting character that has been tied to several plots too. Were there any future plans for the city of Altador and the Betrayer after the Altador Plot (like a continuation I mean)? Do you know if there was a name designated for her or if we were meant to learn her name eventually?
Ooooh also two other questions: Your favourite grundo colours? I’m zapping for robot, I love this colour with and without casket :3 Do you know how the glitched grundos came to be? The ones with their colour being “unknown” and coming with all paint brush clothing upon creation? Thank you for reading n.n/
Hiya, Brubru! I was still a programmer during development of this (awesome) game so I was only involved enough on the PS side to give feedback, help Adam brainstorm, and little things like that when he asked us. I did work pretty heavily on the corresponding site plot though (along with Mr. Insane, Dirigibles, and our trusty plot crew), and on the TCG set that was also tied in pretty closely, so we got a good dose of the story and how things tied together.
I really, really love the game. It’s kind of peak Neopets vibe to me with the characters and environments and MAGIC MOTES and Petpets and all of it. Sometimes it’s silly and sometimes it’s dark and it’s always alive, filled with interesting magics, fantastical places, and Neopets that feel like real people. I could babble on forever about it but tl;dr: it’s great. It wasn’t always executed the best but RPGs are hard (shipping any game is downright magic really) so the fact that it got made at all is kind of a miracle. ?
The self-contained story of TDF waking up and needing to be stopped is great, but overall I find the potential relationship between her and Altador particularly interesting. (I don’t mean romantically. Sorry, shippers.) The King feels responsible for her, right or wrong, and that affects him greatly. He’s also as benevolent as they come but how forgiving can you be with that kind of betrayal? We intentionally set up her statue disappearing at the end of The Faeries’ Ruin and him setting off to find her so we could finally explore that some more. We sadly never got to it but I think it would have been a great story to tell. (I’ve heard the new team did something with the statue in a recent plot that included wraiths? I’m not sure of all the details because I don’t follow the lore anymore so apologies if I contradict that! Whatever they ended up with is obviously canon. This is just what we had planned during TFR. [We also had a different plan for wraiths that had nothing to do with TDF—that I guess I can get into when I write more about TFR—but again, they probably diverged from that so our plans for wraiths wouldn’t be canon either.])
TDF never had a working name as far as I know… or at least that I can remember. It was always just The Darkest Faerie. I’m sure we would have come up with one to reveal in the next phase of their story though. It wouldn’t be right if Altador didn’t catch up to her and call her by her real name, either out of exasperation or to try and connect with her one last time and save her from herself. DOES IT WORK?!?! WHO KNOWS!! ?
ALL GRUNDO COLOURS ARE AMAZING AND I LOVE THEM but I’m extra partial to Faerie, Mallow, and Halloween if I had to choose.
Thanks for the interesting questions!
