Snarkie, please, for the love of Fyora. Can you please explain to me why some pets can’t read some books? I know that whether or not a book will be considered “boring” is dependent on the amount of characters in the pet’s name, but WHY? What was the thought process behind that?! Was it just to irritate users? That’s the only reason I can think of.
Heya, Chloe!
That was something Adam added when he built the system very, very early on and I think there were two reasons he did it:
1) He wanted to add some personality and surprise both to the book reading feature and to the Neopets themselves. Having every Neopet be the same is boring and lacks depth and interest so it was usually a goal with new features to have them say and do things that were surprising and made them feel real. Not every person likes every book, so not every Neopet likes every book.
2) Adam is a huge troll and likes to annoy people. (I say that with love.)
This obviously presented a bit of a problem with intelligence stat usage and high score lists as time went on, which is why we never fixed the “bug” where you could usually get them to read it by changing languages. So, basically, the fact that they don’t read certain books in your main language is for narrative purposes (surprise and personality). The fact that you can get around that by changing languages is for gameplay purposes.
I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the question! ?
